This offroad Duathlon is the big event for our youngsters – this race is for primary and intermediate kids and has been going for three years now. Since 2010 we have an Inter-School Competition, so schools can battle it out amongst them for a trophy that gets to stay with the winners for a year each! Points for this trophy are based on competitor numbers (so the more kids from one school, the better) and placings. This race is now also on a Tuesday daytime during school terms – we hope this will encourage schools to include the Duathlon into their PE curriculum.
As in previous years, the race is happening at the Waipa MTB Carpark, with two distances on offer:
- Short Course : 500 m Run – 3 km MTB – 500 m Run
- Long Course : 1.5 km Run – 8 km MTB – 500 m Run
The new bike course for the long course is as follows (map to come if we manage to track one down that shows new Puaranga track well!!!!):
Exit transition – ride up Pohaturoa Road until the big intersection – turn right onto Nursery road – turn right at intersection Nursery/Red Tank road (this is the intersection of the start of “Mad if you don’t” MTB track) – down Nursery road towards the Mill – at the end of this road turn left into the new Puaranga track – follow Puaranga track and at the exit turn left onto Larch road – at the end of Larch turn left onto Red Tank – back at intersection Red Tank/Nursery road, turn right onto Nursery road here and bike back towards transition the way you came – turn left onto Pohaturoa Road – enter Transition.
There will be plenty of signage on the course as well as marshals on the critical intersections.
The 500m run is on the grass field of the Waipa MTB carpark, the map for the short couse bike/long course run can be downloaded here, the new long course MTB map is coming soon (see description above). Both bike courses are subject to change due to logging operations in the area.
Need bikes for your kids??? Rotorua in Gear has come on board and will be supplying a limited amount of bikes in varying sizes for the event! If you need bikes, please contact us on info@rats.org.nz so we can book you in and check we have the right sizes for you.
